GR>it. Around here, "By golly" is a biggie, along with "and stuff"
GR> and "for id
I seem to hear "Uhrah uh rah uh" quite a bit also. It seems to be some
type of linking phrase between two totally unrelated and
uncomprehensible thoughts, presuming of course there is an actual
thought process going on.
GR>I tell newbies to talk just like they would on the phone or in person. When
GR>you get home, say "I'm home now" and not "I'm at the home QTH." There isn't
GR>any good reason to say "73" to someone when it is just as easy to say "Bye,"
GR>but for cripes sake, don't say "73's."
Good advice, but pray tell, what is the difference betwixt 73 and 73's.

JM>#2) what are its disadvantages?
There is a very nice article on building a through the glass antenna in
the 1994 ARRL Handbook (and earlier versions as well). It should answer
all your questions.

I've made one quite similar in french and english, compatible with Hamcall
CD-ROM. Plenty of other things...
I dont't know the price of it but I'm sure mine is cheaper (30$ can)

To any Australian amateurs (or others):
I would like to obtain technical information
on the radios used by the Coastwatchers in both
Australia and in the Solomons during WWII.
I would like to obtain photographs, technical descriptions,
schematics, and stories of their use. Are any of these sets
preserved anywhere. Are any available?
Many thanks in advance.

Subject: CB/HAM radio interference on phone lines
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Hope some one can help out there :)
I have three people in the neighborhood that are running CB's or HAM radios.
When these people are transmitting they walk all over the phone lines,
Stereo equipment, TV, and baby monitor.
I've called the phone company, cable company, and FCC. The phone and cable
company's say not our problems !!! I have disconnected the phone line coming
into the house, and put a phone on the line that comes in the house. I
still get interference !!! All the phone company said at that was "If you
mess up your phone lines, we'll have to charge you to fix it".
The FCC has been next to useless. It took days to just get ahold of a person,
then he says call your phone company and hangs up !!!
Now my question, is there any kind of filter I can buy to put on my phone
line that will filter that junk out ??? I run a modem from time to time,
so it can't screw with that. I can live with the TV and stereo interference,
but my phone is totally useless when they are transmitting.
Any help at all short of blowing up their transmitters is welcome :)
Please EMAIL to the addr listed below, don't read this group very often.
Thanks...

Sorry for the ill-placed posting but this is a hot button for me...
In Denver a couple of years ago a woman did just this, was cited, and I believe
the ACLU participated in her defense ("improper use of lights" or some such
weasel-wording). She won; the judge said the rule didn't apply to this kind
of situation. Don't know if the nazis appealed.
Yes we have more than our share of "speed trap ahead run by local parasites".

Gary-
At first, my observations were similar to yours. But after playing with it
for a while, I found that up to 50% of people's voices are too monotonous,
and get partially nulled-out as if they were heterodynes!
I wonder if the operating instructions might be in error. For example,
audio output has a rating that should drive a loudspeaker in the mobile
environment. However, when the input level is adjusted down so the red
light blinks, maximum output level is barely adequate.
Considering the cost of some of the other DSP units, I suppose the RS unit
is worth the price. However, I consider it strictly "first generation".
If we are very lucky, a second generation DSP chip will soon be available
to plug right in.

I'm glad this story had a happy ending!
But Sandy, that paper had to be graded the same whether a 20 year old or
an 80 year old wrote it, so I see no basis for even thinking about an
age-discrimination lawsuit. You're taking the place of the government's
FCC examiner (remember sitting in front of him? Scary, huh?), so you have
to be objective until it hurts.
We've got to get out of this type of thinking where if something doesn't
go our way we immediately consider `lawsuit'.

Who cares! It used to bug me too until someone identified themselves
as "N9CALL Friday", now it's kind of a joke. Why does the actual language
matter as long as an idea is communicated accurately? Hopefully the new
hams will learn the proper operating techniques from hams that know the
proper way to operate.

I suppose even if the farmer posted "Please obey strictly enforced
speed limits just to be on the safe side" the police might still bug
him. Even if the farmer told them "I just want to tell people to
not speed and have accidents".

If your vehicle has an electric-wire rear window defroster, like my 911s
the answer is poorly to hardly at all...and when adjusted for an SWR of 1.3:1
at 146MHz the match went to 7:1 at 145, and 11:1 at 147. In short, the cap
coupled antennas do not work real well at these frequencies if there is ANY
other metal around...and keep it at least 1" away from the metallic edge..or
it wont work at all...I trashed mine via the mail back to Antenna SPecialists
since HRO refused to refund my money.

Hmmm, I've always wondered if it is absolutely necessary to id every 10
minutes if you are in a roundtable with 5 or 6 or more people and not
saying much. My policy is, if I don't normally say alot in the rt, is to
say my call discretely on the end of every transmission. It usually ends
up happening anyhow, especially if you say something directed to a
specific individual. 73
